Red Lion Area Senior High School was the first school in York County to kick off Manufacturing Week!
Students toured Specialty Industries of Red Lion on Monday, October 2. Students were greeted by CEO, Frederick Cheek, and given an overall view of Specialty Industries. This green manufacturing facility has been in business over 40 years in the design and manufacture of custom product packaging for businesses in both the United States (many local) and throughout the world. They have specialized, state-of-the-art CAD/CAM capabilities, in-house graphic design, computerized sample development systems, raw material ownership, and automated order entry using the latest technology available. Specialty Industries is the complete package in terms of customer service – from idea and concept to production to delivery – they handle all facets.
Students were given a comprehensive tour of the entire facility, stopping at various machines along the way. At each stop employees shared their role and a bit of history about themselves individually. Many of the students were surprised to learn of the number of longevity employees who have worked their way upward after having started at the bottom. Students also learned of the vast opportunities available to them, the education and training required in certain areas, and of the substantial employee benefits. During a question/answer working lunch session, students were given a cardboard die cut of an airplane and using only a completed diagram as a guide, assembled their own airplane. In addition, students were given a box with our Lion logo filled with items from the Specialty facilities. Naturally, both items were designed and manufactured by Specialty Industries.
It was truly an amazing, eye-opening manufacturing experience!
